WestGrid is a not-for-profit organization that works with other Canadian organizations and Compute Canada to provide the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) tools that researchers need.  These tools range from powerful computers and storage resources to specialized software and data management tools - combining them with a service layer of technical expertise, support personnel, and training.


We help academic researchers or collaborators, from any discipline, location, or institution in Canada tackle complex scientific problems, manage big data sets, reduce processing times, build scientific platforms, and collaborate with colleagues across Canada and the world.


Job Overview


The Research Computing Training Assistant supports and delivers research computing training sessions across all WestGrid Member institutions online, in-person, or over multiple days. The Assistant works with the Training & Visualization Coordinator to identify gaps in training areas and develops new training materials and courses.




Working with the Training and Visualization Coordinator, the Research Computing Training Assistant is responsible for:

  • Providing training and outreach on a variety of research computing topics, focusing on new user and non-traditional HPC domain support. This includes selecting relevant topics, developing training material and courses, managing event logistics, coordinating with communication teams, delivering training and outreach sessions, and training other staff to provide seminars and workshops.
  • Supporting researchers in their research computing needs by email, through the ticketing system and in person, as required.
  • Contributing to the annual vision and training outreach plan for WestGrid, implementing the plan across all Member institutions.
  • Acting as a liaison with WestGrid Member institutions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for research computing support and training.
  • Writing research computing support and training documentation.
  • Participating in the national Compute Canada education, outreach and training team.
  • Contributing to regional or national HPC- or scientific computing-related training (e.g. Software Carpentry, Summer Schools).


Qualifications and Competencies


  • Academic background (graduate degree preferred) in a discipline utilizing research computing.
  • Experience supporting computation and big data in a research setting, translating user needs into technology services.
  • Familiarity with Linux, HPC and research computing.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, learning research computing topics, and ability to research new topics with minimal guidance
  • Experience with one or more programming languages: C, C++, Chapel, Python, R, MATLAB
  • Experience working with scientific, medical, geospatial, social sciences, or humanities data
  • Ability to work effectively with large datasets
  • Ability to travel in Western Canada
  • Ability to teach in academic setting and give presentations to audiences of up to 100 people
  • Outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently



WestGrid is a distributed organization throughout Western Canada.  They primarily work remotely from home-based offices.  A Western Canada location is preferred for new employees.
