Role Overview

The Operations Manager, Packing develops processes, policies, and procedures related to product packing. They ensure that budgets are met, with a focus on accountability, reliability, efficiency and waste reduction. The responsibilities include managing all of Champ's packing capabilities, ensuring orders are prepared for shipping on time and to a high degree of quality, and projects related to farm expansion. They work collaboratively with other departments of the Company including Agriculture, Engineering, Sales, Human Resources, Finance and Purchasing. They direct, support, and train the packing staff in a manner that creates engagement and productivity within the team.

The standard operating hours for the Operations Manager, Packing will be 7AM-5PM with whatever hours required by the needs of the business from time to time.

Role Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the vision, mission and strategy development for all current and future packing operations
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to create post-harvest handling and packing processes and policies, aligned with Champ's Mushrooms' business goals
  • Monitor quality control of post-harvest handling and packing of produce
  • Ensure all product is packed with strict adherence to Food Safety policies and customer specifications
  • Address any issues pertaining to production, shipping/receiving, quality, as well as the health and safety of the employees
  • Ensure that all workers adhere to policies & procedures
  • Encourage innovation through collaboration with department leaders to ensure excellent quality
  • Ensure key performance indicators for department are met and develop best practices to maximize potential. These include but are not limited to throughput, wastage, and labor costs
  • Interact with suppliers, 3rd party auditors, customers and internal auditors, when required
  • Foster a culture of continual improvement and profitability
  • Foster a culture of respect and collaborative team work
  • Lead best practices in food safety, environmental, occupational health and safety and other legislative compliance requirements
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a manufacturing-related packing leadership role in a medium manufacturing facility, preferably food processing.
  • Must be able to lead a processing plant in a very fast paced environment.
  • Solid technical operating skills in a food environment, including processing, equipment, food safety basics, packing systems, production and inventory control and information systems.
  • Qualified candidates will have processing, logistics and warehousing/shipping experience.
  • Experience developing appropriate policies and procedures to ensure compliance within manufacturing, operational practices, applicable laws and GMPs/food safety requirements.
  • Flexibility to respond to issues outside of working hours.
  • Previous exposure to working with Computerized Maintenance Management System and Enterprise / Manufacturing Resource Planning systems is a definite advantage.

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence and autonomy
  • Working knowledge of federal and provincial food packing and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to post-harvest handling and packing of produce
  • Experience with food facilities and equipment within food processing plant.
  • Understanding of equipment technologies and limitations and their effect on safety, quality, productivity and cost
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management System and Enterprise / Manufacturing Resource Planning systems
  • Knowledge of how to apply Lean Manufacturing, TPM and OEE into packing approaches
  • Working knowledge of quality assurance and good manufacturing practices.
  • Scheduling & employee management, including hiring and terminations
  • Knowledge of SQF or BRC best practices considered an asset
  • Mushroom farming experience is considered an asset

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to utilize fine motor coordination in hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to lift, up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to balance, stoop or crouch.
  • Regularly required to climb stairs.
  • Occasionally exposed to a variety of temperatures, weather conditions, and sound levels.
  • Occasionally exposed to hazardous conditions requiring personal protective equipment.
